Sanna's Bag

“I never seem to have what I need when I need it. I’m going to make a belt-bag that’s bigger on the inside than on the outside, and just carry everything with me.”

Good morning Monday!

It's going to be clear and hot today. What a sweet start to the sunrise!

I found a new feature on my camera. It's called slow synchro, and it lets me take great pictures in low light. Our roses have been thriving in the cooler weather, but the heat will be back today.

So now the question is, what shall I wear to work? It's gotta be warm enough for the AC, and cool enough for the drive home. Business-like, and easy to sit in all day long. That last qualifier throws out any pair of jeans I've ever owned. I've noticed the young ladies wearing the sprayed on "Skinny" jeans also seem to be wearing a pinched, uncomfortable look. Well, yeah! When you have a honking big seam hiked right up into the girly bits every time you bend, you are going to be uncomfortable. Duh! but i guess we have to suffer to be beautiful, right?

When a woman reaches a certain age, she becomes invisible. At first, I was angry and hurt to have vanished off the public radar. But now, I find it wonderfully liberating. I can play hopscotch or do a little twirl of delight on a sunny day or talk to passing squirrels. No one's looking at me anyway. If I don't get my makeup on, who cares? I might try doing just one side of my face an see if anyone notices. And the hair - the gray hair is a lot more assertive than the dark locks. I usually slap it into some kind of bondage for work, but some day I might go in looking like I have been assaulted by a rabid raccoon. I can get it to stand six inches above my scalp without using any product. Big hair used to be fashionable. I the south they say, "The higher the hair, the closer to God!"

Did you see Lucy Neatby or any of the other fabulously wild women at Sock Summit? I seriously want to have fun with color and clothes now! Most of my shopping is done at garage sales or the Goodwill. Unfortunately all of the low-rise pants so popular several years back are now the main staple there. They require the wearer to prune the hedges before donning them if you catch my meaning. Not attractive with middle aged paunches either.

Hey, I saw you leaving work and you did not look like the wild-haired, wild woman to me??!!!!

Big hair is a New Jersey thing, you should see some of the girls (and women!) who pile their curly, frizzy, teased-out hair on top of their head. We tease one girl I work with by telling her she looks like Gene Simmons from the back. It's crazy!
And comfortable but also professional clothing is hard to find. Suits never classify. There is no such thing as a warm pair of dress pants (unless it's spring or summer). Try getting yourself a few nice comfy skirts that hang midcalf. You can always accompany them with a plain white shirt and a -gasp, idea!- knitted cardigan or shawl.

I was just going to suggest cotton knit skirts. I have one, wearing it all summer.

My mother had a wonderful saying: When I was 20, I worried about what people thought of me. When I was 40, I quit caring what people thought of me. When I was 60, I realized no one was thinking about me anyway. Quite liberting, she said.

Urgh... Skinny jeans are for the skinny. Since I don't qualify, I don't have to wear them! And interesting to know I'm not the only one who goes bdsm with my hair... (but I refuse to believe you're invisible. You, darling are fabulous!)

My favorite jeans right now are Lucky classic fit - I can actually sit down in them without them digging into me in the front or leaving my rear too drafty!

As for the hair, I mostly keep mine braided up, fully bondaged. It stays out of the way and I like the anti-fashion functionality of it.

I sometimes think we're as visible or invisible as we let ourselves be. And while people might not stare openly, I have a hard time believing that nobody notices your fabulosity. More likely, people are willing to give you a modicum of respect (and that's sometimes all one can get) and not openly size you up like a piece of meat. I think that, as we age, people feel less obligated to share their un-asked for opinions with us. Or maybe you just live in a city full of people who concentrate on their doings rather than on gossiping 'bout the neighbors. I hope not, though. That'd be terribly dull!

They're not looking at you because there are too many people with dreadlocks, purple mohawks (older then both of us), and tattoos everywhere. Besides it's liberating to be under the radar.
